Over the past six weeks we have journeyed alongside Abraham, Hannah, David, the Psalmist and Solomon. We have listened to prayers of questioning, longing, confession, waiting and worship. Each prayer has reminded us that God welcomes us just as we are and invites us into a deeper relationship with him.
As this series, Real Prayer for Real Life, has come to an end, the invitation to pray does not.
Prayer is not simply a summer activity or a spiritual discipline to practise for a few weeks. It is an ongoing conversation with our heavenly Father. It is the way we grow in our relationship with him, learning to trust him more deeply and discovering his presence in every season of life.
There will still be questions to ask, burdens to carry, failures to confess, prayers that seem unanswered and reasons to worship and give thanks. Through it all, God remains faithful. He continues to invite us to come to him with confidence, knowing that he hears us, loves us and walks with us every step of the journey. I love the image we have in Psalm 116:2, which says, ‘because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live’.
As you begin this final week of focusing on our summer series, ask God to help you continue the conversation each and every day as you seek to follow him and grow in your knowledge of who he is and all that he has accomplished for you.

MONDAY
Prayer as a Daily Relationship
Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.John 15:4–5
Prayer is far more than presenting a list of requests to God. It is about remaining close to him each day. Jesus describes our relationship with him as branches connected to a vine. Just as a branch depends upon the vine for life, we depend upon him for everything. Prayer keeps us connected to the source of our strength, wisdom and hope. The goal of prayer has never simply been to receive answers. It is to know God more deeply and to walk with him every day.

How might your prayer life change if you saw prayer primarily as relationship rather than responsibility?

Heavenly Father, thank you that you invite me into a daily relationship with you. Help me to remain close to you and to make prayer a natural part of each day. Teach me to delight in your presence and to depend on you in every season. Amen.
TUESDAY
Learning to Listen
So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”1 Samuel 3:9–10
Prayer is often described as talking to God. Yet every healthy relationship involves listening as well as speaking. In the busyness of life, it is easy to fill every moment with words and never pause to listen. God still speaks through his word, by his Spirit and through the quiet prompting of his presence. Sometimes the most meaningful part of prayer is simply being still before him.

When was the last time you intentionally sat quietly before God and listened?

Heavenly Father, help me not only to speak to you but also to listen. Quieten my heart, remove distractions and teach me to recognise your voice through your word and by your Spirit. Teach me to be still and know that you are God. Amen.
WEDNESDAY
Praying in Every Season
There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.Ecclesiastes 3:1–8
Life is made up of many different seasons. There are times of joy and times of sorrow, seasons of certainty and seasons of waiting. The people we have met throughout this series experienced many different circumstances, yet they all discovered the same truth: God was faithful in every season. Prayer reminds us that we never have to face life's changing seasons alone. Whatever today holds, God invites us to walk through it with him.

What season of life are you in today, and how is God inviting you to trust him in it?

Heavenly Father, thank you that you are with me in every season of life. Whether I am celebrating or struggling, help me to continue walking closely with you and trusting your faithful care. Amen.
THURSDAY
Never Stop Praying
Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. He said: “In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people thought. And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice against my adversary.’ For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care what people think, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually come and attack me!’” And the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?”Luke 18:1–8
Some prayers are answered quickly. Others require us to keep praying, trusting and waiting. Jesus encouraged his disciples not to give up. Persistence in prayer is not about persuading a reluctant God. It is about continuing to trust a faithful God, even when the answers do not come as quickly as we would like. Every prayer offered in faith is an expression of our dependence upon him.

Heavenly Father, give me perseverance in prayer. When answers seem delayed, help me not to lose heart but to continue trusting your wisdom, your love and your perfect timing. Amen.
FRIDAY
Carrying Others in Prayer
And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.Ephesians 6:18
Prayer is never only about ourselves. Throughout this series we have seen people praying not only for their own needs but also for others. One of the greatest gifts we can give someone is to faithfully bring them before God. Our prayers become part of God's work in encouraging, strengthening and sustaining those we love.

Who has God placed on your heart to pray for faithfully?

Heavenly Father, thank you for the people you have placed in my life. Help me to carry them faithfully in prayer and to be an encouragement to them through both my prayers and my actions. Amen.
SATURDAY
Trusting God with Tomorrow
In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.Proverbs 16:9
None of us knows what tomorrow will bring. We make plans, set goals and look towards the future, yet ultimately our lives remain in God's hands. This is not something to fear but something to embrace. The God who has been faithful in the past will continue to lead us in the future. Prayer helps us surrender our plans with confidence, knowing that his purposes are always good.

What future plan or uncertainty do you need to place into God's hands today?

Heavenly Father, thank you that my future is safe in your hands. Help me to trust your leading, surrendering my plans to you and walking forward with confidence in your presence and faithful care. Amen.
SUNDAY
Continuing the Conversation
The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.Psalm 145:18
As this prayer diary comes to an end, God's invitation remains the same. He is still near to those who call on him. He still listens to every prayer. He still welcomes questions, receives our tears, forgives our failures, strengthens our faith and fills our hearts with hope. The series may have ended, but prayer continues. May these weeks simply be the beginning of a deeper, richer and more consistent conversation with the God who knows you, loves you and delights to hear your voice.

Looking back over these six weeks, what has God been teaching you about prayer, and what one step will you take to continue growing in your relationship with him?

Heavenly Father, thank you for walking with me throughout this journey. Thank you for welcoming my questions, hearing my prayers and reminding me of your faithfulness. Help me to continue growing in my relationship with you. May prayer become not simply something I do, but the way I walk with you each day. Amen.
