Throughout our summer series, Real Prayers for Real Life, we have listened as people bring their questions, burdens, failures and struggles before God. We have been reminded that prayer is a place of honesty, dependence and trust.
Yet prayer is more than bringing our needs to God. It is also an opportunity to lift our eyes and remember who God is. When Solomon dedicated the Temple, his prayer was filled with wonder. He reflected on God's greatness, faithfulness and holiness. He recognised that the God who created the heavens was also the God who listened to the prayers of his people.
In the busyness of life, it is easy to focus on our circumstances and forget the greatness of the God we worship. This week we will pause and reflect on God's character, his faithfulness and his purposes. As we do, may our prayers be shaped not only by our needs but also by a growing sense of awe and gratitude.
Take a moment to be still before God. Remember who he is. And allow your heart to be filled once again with wonder at his goodness and grace.

MONDAY
A God Who Is Greater Than We Imagine
But will God really dwell on earth? The heavens, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you. How much less this temple I have built!
1 Kings 8:27
When Solomon dedicated the Temple, he was overwhelmed by the greatness of God. Even the heavens could not contain him, yet God chose to dwell among his people. It is easy to reduce God to our own understanding and expectations. We can become so focused on our problems that we lose sight of his greatness. Prayer reminds us that the God we approach is greater than anything we face. He sees what we cannot see, knows what we do not know and is able to do far more than we can imagine.

How might your perspective change if you focused more on God's greatness than on your current circumstances?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank you that you are greater than I can fully understand and yet close enough to hear my prayers. Lift my eyes beyond my circumstances and help me to see you more clearly. Teach me to trust you more deeply and to rest in your wisdom, your faithfulness and your unfailing care. Amen.
TUESDAY
Worship Before Request
I will exalt you, my God the King; I will praise your name for ever and ever. Every day I will praise you and extol your name for ever and ever. Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom. One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts. They speak of the glorious splendour of your majesty, and I will meditate on your wonderful works. They tell of the power of your awesome works and I will proclaim your great deeds. They celebrate your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of your righteousness.
Psalm 145:1–7
Many of us begin prayer with our needs and concerns. While God welcomes those prayers, God’s word often begins with worship. Worship lifts our eyes from ourselves and focuses our attention on God. It reminds us of his goodness, faithfulness and love. As we take time to praise God, our hearts are encouraged and our perspective begins to change. We remember that prayer is not simply about receiving from God but about enjoying our relationship with him.

Heavenly Father, thank you for your goodness, faithfulness and unfailing love. Help me to worship you not only for what you do but for who you are. Amen.
WEDNESDAY
Returning to God
If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:8–9
One of the themes within Solomon's prayer is the recognition that God's people would not always get things right. The wonderful news of the gospel is that God continually invites us back to himself. No matter how far we wander, his grace remains available. Prayer provides an opportunity to examine our hearts and allow God to draw us closer to him once again.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank you for your mercy, unfailing love and forgiveness. Search my heart today and help me to walk closely with you in every area of my life. Amen.
THURSDAY
Praying for Our Community
Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.
Jeremiah 29:7
Solomon's prayer was not focused solely on himself. He prayed for God's people and for those who would come after them. Prayer helps us look beyond our own concerns and remember the needs of others. It reminds us that God is at work in our families, churches, neighbourhoods and communities. As we pray for those around us, we participate in God's work and become more aware of his heart for others. Surely, in these days we need to pray more for our families, churches, neighbourhoods and communities.

Heavenly Father, thank you for the people and places you have entrusted to my care. Help me to pray faithfully for others and to reflect your love in my community. Amen.
FRIDAY
Praying for Future Generations
We will not hide them from their descendants; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power, and the wonders he has done. He decreed statutes for Jacob and established the law in Israel, which he commanded our ancestors to teach their children, so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children. Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds …
Psalm 78:4–7
Faith was never intended to stop with us. Throughout God’s word we see God's people passing on the story of his faithfulness to future generations. Solomon understood that what happened in his day would affect those who came after him. Our prayers today may have an impact far beyond what we can see. As we pray for children, young people and future generations, we participate in God's ongoing work.

Heavenly Father, thank you for those who helped shape my faith. Help me to encourage, support and pray faithfully for those who come after me. Amen.
SATURDAY
Remembering God's Faithfulness
Not one of all the Lord’s good promises to Israel failed; every one was fulfilled.
Joshua 21:45
Throughout Solomon's prayer there is a strong emphasis on remembering God's faithfulness. Looking back reminds us that God has kept his promises time and time again. His faithfulness in the past gives us confidence for the future. When we take time to remember God's goodness, our faith is strengthened and our trust renewed.

Where have you seen God's faithfulness in your life over the years?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank you for your faithfulness through every season of my life. Help me to remember your goodness and trust you with whatever lies ahead. Amen.
SUNDAY
Living with Gratitude and Reverence
Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire.
Hebrews 12:28–29
The more we understand who God is, the more naturally our hearts respond with gratitude and worship. We give thanks for his goodness, faithfulness and love, and we worship him because he is holy, majestic and worthy of our praise. As we grow in our awareness of who God is, we learn to live with humility, joy and wonder. Prayer becomes more than bringing requests; it becomes a response to the greatness and goodness of God. As we come to the end of this week, we are reminded that prayer is not simply about speaking to God. It is about growing in our awareness of who he is and responding to him in worship.

Heavenly Father, thank you for your goodness, holiness and love. Help me to live with gratitude in my heart and a deeper sense of wonder at who you are. May my life and worship reflect my love for you as I continue to follow you. Amen.
