Prayer is the most important and greatest weapon against the enemy. Christ chooses the weak, not the strong to follow Him. We are not asked to go into battle with bombs, shields and swords but asked to go in faith in God and in prayer.

It surprises me today how so many people allow themselves to be consumed by worry. I have friends and family that, when they waken in the morning, their first thought is, ‘what could I worry about today?’ One of my favourite thoughts is ‘today was yesterday’s tomorrow and here we are in it’. We shouldn’t allow ourselves to be filled with tomorrow’s worries – today has its own worries – trusting the Lord Jesus Christ with our worries.

Mental health is overtaking our nation, like no other time before, because there is so much to be anxious about in the world today. I did learn once that there were 366 times that God said in His word in different ways not to be afraid. We must hold on to that truth. If He is with us, we have nothing to fear. We might meet opposition or hardship, or we might meet torture or death but we must not fear because God is with us. As a song writer once wrote ‘this world is not my home.’ There are so many verses telling us not to be afraid so let us study a few.

MONDAY

Joshua 1:9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

It’s not easy to be strong and courageous when surrounded by opposition, that’s the sort of faith God wants us to have, faith like a mustard seed.

Lord, help me today to be strong and courageous, help me to depend on you. Lord, I know I will meet opposition but don’t let me be fearful, help me stand my ground in you. This I ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.

TUESDAY

Psalm 46:1-3 “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.”

That is an almighty verse, to believe like that. We are not to fear, regardless of our circumstances because God is with us. Like the disciples in the boat when they thought they were going to drown, they were so afraid. Jesus looked and with His mighty words He said “... be still” and the waters were made still.

Lord, I ask today that you will increase my faith in you and not to be afraid regardless of circumstances. This I ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.

WEDNESDAY

Deuteronomy 31:6 “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Isn’t that wonderful news, that He is going ahead of us? He sees the danger we are going to be in, He doesn’t stop it for us – sometimes He might but other times He lets us go through it so that we may lean heavily on Him. How heavily do we lean on Him today or do we often choose to lean on ourselves and go our own way? He said He will guide and lead us and go before us, that we must trust.

Psalm 23:4 “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

Help me, Lord, today to rely and trust in you, whatever I may go through, to trust in your plan. This I ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.

THURSDAY

2 Timothy 1:7 “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.”

We have the Spirit living within us, it’s not something separate, we actually have the Spirit of the living God IN US. This is encouraging news. Lord, help me to remember that you have given us your Spirit, help me not to be afraid to take a step forward even when I don’t know what’s in front of me, but know that you are guiding me.

When my husband died, I knew I was no farmer, I was the farm labourer, but I knew I need not be afraid. Even in my lack of knowledge I knew I could not do what was required of me in my own strength. I knew, ultimately, I was in Christ’s hands, and He would provide. May I continue to trust always in His ways. This I ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.

FRIDAY

Luke 12:22-26 Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds!  Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life?  Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?”

It is so easy to be worried that we don’t understand or don’t know, and that fact overwhelms us. Let’s turn to God in these times and pour ourselves out to Him.

Lord, help me to cast my worries upon you, knowing that you have it all in hand, that you take care of worries. This I ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.

SATURDAY

Philippians 4:6-7 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

It is outstanding that He asks us not to be anxious about anything but rather to go to God with our need. Do we sometimes start to worry, or we allow a worry to grow? God is asking us to come before Him and present these worries at His feet. Why? Because only He is able.

Lord, I pray to stay close to you, leaning on you in times of worry. I thank you, Lord, for bringing me through this far and please continue to do so. I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

SUNDAY

1 Peter 5:6-7 “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”

We don’t like to humble ourselves, though Jesus asks us to. It says in a song, “Oh Lord it is hard to be humble when I am perfect in every way.” This song is a lie. We are far from perfection and should think of others better than ourselves. There is only one who is perfect, our Lord Jesus Christ. Lord, I recognise that I am sinner saved by grace. Thank you, God, for your Son, Jesus Christ.

AMEN.
